The Master Record Type can be a bit of a mystery in Salesforce. In this video, I attempt to answer a student's question related to record type assignments, along with what becomes of the Master Record Type once Custom Record Types are introduced.

  • This is such a hard concept to explain, and you did a great job Mike! Another reason why it is necessary to have a master page layout assigned even when you introduce record types is that there may be legacy data in the system from before record types were added, and the system would need to know which page layout to use for that scenario.

    Best practice would be to go back to the historic records and assign a record type for them, but this is not always done for one of 3 reasons (may be more): (1) Overlooking this step due to lack of knowledge, (2) knowing to do this step, but not doing it because of “budget constraints”, or (3) not wanting to modify any historic data due to compliance or business process reasons.
